More than 626 years have passed since Giovanni Medici opened the doors to the world’s first Bank in 1397. For the first 576 years little changed in the world of finance and banking. It was the technology revolution of the last half-century that transformed banking and finance with huge productivity improvements, particularly in the low-value, repetitive “back end” activities such as ledger-keeping and cheque processing. Life became simpler, easier and more profitable for the Banks and Finance companies and more competitive for consumers.

On the back of these incredible results, the industry sought to embed technology solutions in the “front end” customer experience. Here too, there have been many successes including ATMs, Phone Banking, EFTPOS and Internet Banking to name but a few. More recently, the ability for consumers to apply online for a Personal Loan or Home Loan has revolutionised those markets.

The next big challenge for the industry is in SME Business Lending which remains largely paper-and-human based for both the Customer and the Banker. Indeed, with the increase in Regulatory obligations, obtaining a business loan is more complex today than anytime since Medici’s Bank opened in northern Italy over a half-millenia ago.

This complexity acts like a tax - costing Banks and Customers both time and money. It slows the business lending process and acts as a handbrake on our economy. It’s frustrating and fundamentally flawed.
